Instant Twitter Donations? - Tweet Trial

Microblogging platform Twitter has begun a US trial of a ‘buy now’ button inserted into tweets for instant purchases and donations, tapping into market of more than 58 million users worldwide.

Twitter says it is beginning to test a new way for Twitter users to discover and buy products without leaving the site.

“For a small percentage of U.S. users some Tweets from our test partners will feature a “Buy” button, letting users buy directly from the Tweet.

“This is an early step in our building functionality into Twitter to make shopping from mobile devices convenient and easy,” Tarun Jain, Twitter’s Group Product Manager, said.

“We’ll be starting the test with a group of artists, brands, and Not for Profit organisations.

“Users will get access to offers and merchandise they can’t get anywhere else and can act on them right in the Twitter apps for Android and iOS; sellers will gain a new way to turn the direct relationship they build with their followers into sales,” Jain said.

“In our test, an entire purchase can be completed in just a few taps. After tapping the “Buy” button, you will get additional product details and be prompted to enter your shipping and payment information.

“Once that’s entered and confirmed, your order information is sent to the merchant for delivery.

“We’re not building this alone: we’ve partnered with Fancy (@fancy), Gumroad (@gumroad), Musictoday (@Musictoday) and Stripe (@stripe) as platforms for this initial test.”

Twitter said a number of Not for Profits will be taking part in the testing in coming weeks including The Nature Conservancy (@nature_org), DonorsChoose (@DonorsChoose), Global Citizen (@GlblCtzn) and 9/11 Day (@911Day)

Twitter has set up a support page here as part of the testing.

According to the latest July 2014 statistics there are 645 million active registered Twitter users across the globe with 135,000 new users signing up every day..

There 58 million tweets a day which equates to 9100 tweets every second!

In Australia there are 2.8 million active Twitter users according to latest statistics from David Cowling’s Social Media News.
