Work Opportunities for Indigenous Apprentices

The Department of Human Services is seeking applicants for its Indigenous Apprenticeship Program.

According to Human Services Minister Senator Marise Payne, the 12-month apprenticeship program will give up to 100 successful applicants a launching pad to a public sector career.

"We are committed to providing a rewarding and supportive work environment for our Indigenous apprentices. This includes one-on-one Indigenous mentors to provide advice and support along with diverse training and development opportunities," Senator Payne said.

"The Department of Human Services offers flexible and culturally considerate work practices such as flex time, the option of part-time work and NAIDOC leave.

"My department is the biggest and most diverse federal government employer with a wide range of careers available supporting all Australians through Centrelink, Medicare and Child Support, all agencies that work closely with Indigenous people right across Australia."

Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Senator Nigel Scullion, said investment in the recruitment and support of Indigenous staff in the Australian Public Service was a priority for the Government.

"This programme is helping to close the gap for Indigenous people in employment," Senator Scullion said.

"It's essential that staffing within the public service reflects the diversity of the communities they serve.

"It's about ensuring that government services and programmes are responsive and respectful of the diverse Indigenous cultures throughout Australia."

Simone Williamson successfully completed the Indigenous Apprentices Programme in February last year and now works as a Customer Service Officer in Cairns.

"I'd been at home caring for my new baby for a couple of years and was very excited when the apprenticeship became available as I thought that this might be a great opportunity for me," Williamson said.

"This program has given me an opportunity to learn and grow in a supportive environment.”

Indigenous apprentices will be advertised in the areas listed below. Apprenticeships are located in various teams and roles throughout the department, depending on available vacancies.
