Call Out for Community Champions

Nominations are open for the 2014 HESTA Community Sector Awards, which recognise individuals and organisations in the community sector that have made an exceptional contribution to social justice in Australia.
Finalists will receive complimentary registration for the Australian Council of Social Service (ACOSS) National Conference, with interstate finalists flown to Brisbane for the awards night on Wednesday, June 11.
ACOSS President Francis Lynch said the awards publicly recognised the inspiration those operating in the sector provide to the broader community — in their tireless work supporting and empowering those experiencing poverty and inequality.
“It’s also an opportunity to raise awareness of the need for all members of our community to share the responsibility of working towards a more inclusive, compassionate and fair society,” Lynch said.
Long-standing awards supporter, ME Bank, has provided the prize pool of $30,000, which will be divided between the winners in three award categories.
2013 winners were Victorians Meron Morrison, of Box Hill Citizens Advice Bureau, and disability advocate Pam Erwin, who were joint winners of the Unsung Hero Award, the Australian Drug Foundation, which won the Organisation Award and Project Respect, which won the Social Impact Award.
HESTA Chief Executive Officer Anne-Marie Corboy said those working in the community sector play an important role in building and maintaining an inclusive and fair society.
“Our awards are an opportunity to thank these exceptional individuals and organisations for their impact and long-term commitment to supporting those vulnerable to disadvantage,” Corboy said.
