New International Development Portfolio in Cabinet Re-Shuffle
1 July 2013 at 2:27 pm
Several baton changes and the creation of a new portfolio announced in Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's new ministerial line up are likely to impact on the Not for Profit sector.
The PM's new line up includes the creation of a Minister for International Development with the appointment of West Australian MP, Melissa Park to the Federal Ministry.
Overseas aid agency Oxfam said the appointment of Melissa Park, into the role reflected the importance of Australia’s growing investment in overseas aid.
Oxfam Australian CEO Dr Helen Szoke congratulated Parke on her appointment, saying that having a dedicated minister for Australia’s aid program was overdue.
“Oxfam has long called for a dedicated minister for aid and development, to oversee the growth in Australia’s aid program, and to ensure every dollar spent has the maximum impact on reducing poverty,” she said.
“As a former lawyer with the United Nations and a committed humanitarian, Ms Parke brings considerable knowledge of global development issues to this role.
“During her time as a backbencher, Ms Parke’s passion for international development has always been evident, and Oxfam has enjoyed an excellent working relationship with her for many years."
Also in the new Rudd line up, former Parliamentary Secretary Julie Collins will join the Cabinet as the Minister responsible for Housing and Homelessness, Community Services, Status of Women, and Indigenous Employment and Economic Development. She takes over Housing and Homelessness from Mark Butler, who will now be the Minister for Climate Change and Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Water.
Jacinta Collins, Deputy Leader of the Government in the Senate, also joins the Cabinet as Minister for Mental Health and Ageing.
The re-shuffle has put the largest number of women into the Federal Cabinet.
No politician has been assigned to Minister for Social Inclusion in the re-shuffle, which was first introduced when Kevin Rudd became Prime Minister the first time in 2007.
Jenny Macklin will continue in the portfolios of Minister for Families, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs Minister for Disability Reform.
