Ethnic Communities Governance Initiative

Victorian multicultural organisations will be given strategic and practical support to improve their governance through a new project initiative launched by the Ethnic Communities’ Council of Victoria (ECCV).
The Futures Project, funded by the Scanlon Foundation and in partnership with the Australian Multicultural Foundation and Leadership Victoria, will provide governance support for volunteer driven, ethno-specific and multicultural organisations.
ECCV chairperson Eddie Micallef said the project aimed to provide a governance model, which multicultural communities would work together through their respective organisations, building and strengthening cross-cultural connections and relationships.
“This project has been created to address an identified need for greater governance of ethnic and multicultural organisations; a need that ECCV recognises will continue to challenge the sector,” he said.
“Through forums, targeted support and ongoing mentoring, the project will provide a variety of long-lasting benefits to ethnic and multicultural organisations.
“This includes providing a strengthened ethnic and multicultural community sector by improving organisational governance capacity.
“The mentoring element of the project will assist ethnic and multicultural organisations who are finding it difficult to plan for the future and more recently established organisations that need support to enable them to thrive and grow.”
He said the Futures Project aimed to provide a high level of information, resources and opportunities around governance, which would work to build the confidence of ethnic and multicultural organisations to actively participate and contribute to the social, cultural and economic vibrancy of community life in Victoria.
