NFP Makes Aussie Crowdfunding History

A sanctuary dedicated to rescued farm animals in Victoria, called Edgar’s Mission, has set a new Australian record for Not for Profit crowdfunding on Chuffed.org.

In the crowdfunding world, six-figure fundraising totals have nearly uniquely been reserved for technology, gaming, film and design projects.

According to Chuffed.org, Not for Profit and social cause projects rarely feature in lists of the biggest crowdfunding projects. In 2013, of the top five crowdfunding campaigns run by Australians, it says none were for a social cause.

“In its first attempt at crowdfunding, Edgar’s set out to raise $50,000 over 60 days to build its new home in Lancefield, Victoria, 70km north of Melbourne, after it had outgrown its current space in the foothills of the Great Dividing Ranges,” Edgar’s Mission Founder and Director, Pam Ahern said.

“The $50,000 target was hit and exceeded in 3 days. The campaign went on to close at over $162,400 from 1,785 people in 14 countries. This sets a new record for both the total raised and the number of supporters for an Australian social cause crowdfunding campaign.

“I was absolutely blown away with the kindness, generosity and belief people have shown for our work. Crowdfunding has been an incredible tool which has enabled people to really feel a part of creating Edgar’s Mission Mark 2."

“The Edgar’s Mission campaign demonstrates the power of crowdfunding in our sector to not only raise significant funds, but also to grow the reach of your organisation” Prashan Paramanathan, Founder and CEO of Australian Not for Profit crowdfunding platform Chuffed.org  said.

“With the exponential growth in demand that we’re seeing on Chuffed.org, we’re quietly confident that projects from the social sector will start to join the technology, film and gaming projects on the 2014 list of biggest Australian crowdfunding campaigns.

“Indeed, if this project was run in 2013, it would be the fifth biggest Australian crowdfunding project across all sectors,” he said.
