Slowing business activity in Australia’s commercial sector is increasingly encouraging professionals to look for work in the Not for Profit and government areas, says recruitment agency, Michael Page Australia’s consulting team.

According to Sung Ho Lee, Manager at Michael Page Australia,  in the context of current economic conditions, hiring activity is slowing and salaries are flat within corporate Australia.

He said Michael Page consultants were witnessing an increase in the number of professionals looking for jobs in the Not for Profit/government space as these organisations had been less impacted by the domestic economy.

He said job seekers from the corporate sector were attracted to government jobs as they typically offered above average superannuation contributions and annual salary increases.

“In comparison to a slowing recruitment market in the commercial and banking sectors, there has been a consistent volume of contracting recruitment within the government sector as large-scale transformational change is occurring across this area, as well as the Not for Profit sector,” Lee said.

Lee said many Australian workers were keen to be a part of and contribute to transformational change occurring in some larger Not for Profit companies, some of which were working on exciting, big-ticket projects to corporatise their business, or those that were modifying their operating and funding models.

“The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a generational national reform that is shifting the way some Not for Profit organisations operate,” Lee said.

“These organisations now need to focus on commercialising their services, which will have a positive impact on the Australian community.

“Candidates are seeing this change and are now more open to moving into the Not for Profit sector.”
