About the role

Tender Funerals Greater Eastern Melbourne is seeking a Treasurer to join our Board at an exciting time in our development. 

Tender Funerals is a not-for-profit funeral service that ensures that those experiencing financial hardship or distress are able to access personalised, meaningful and affordable funerals. Tender encourages practices that promote healing, including enabling family and friends to participate in any aspects of the funeral process they choose. 

In August 2022, our aspirant group formed with the intention to establish a not-for-profit Tender Funerals site in the Greater Eastern Melbourne area. We are now incorporated and in the process of receiving charitable status from the ACNC to allow us to raise funds, secure a premises and establish operations.

Key to our project development is the formation of a diverse board who are passionate and committed to ensuring Greater Eastern Melbourne has access to a not-for-profit funeral service.

As the Tender Funerals Greater Eastern Melbourne Treasurer you will have oversight over the company’s financial position and future financial planning. You will support financial governance and assist with accounting and financial management tasks.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

As Treasurer you will guide the Board on financial governance with key responsibilities to be: 

  • Prepare and present timely annual/monthly budgets and accounts, financial statements and financial reports. 
  • Prepare annual financial report and annual Treasurer’s report 
  • Ensure records are auditable, audits are conducted and recommendations are implemented. 
  • Advise on financial implications of Tender Funeral Greater Eastern Melbourne’s strategic and operational plans and decisions. 
  • Champion implementation of financial systems and control procedures and Board Members’ financial management capabilities, including understanding their financial obligations, and best practice. 
  • Work with program and functional leads as they manage their financial plans, reporting and outcomes. 
  • Ensure accounts meet conditions of contractual agreements with external agencies such as funders and statutory bodies. 
  • Ensure financial records of Tender Funerals Greater Eastern Melbourne are kept according to the Associations Incorporation Reform Act 2012. 

 

In addition to your specific duties as Treasurer, you will be an active member of the Tender Funerals Greater Eastern Melbourne Board with full Director accountabilities and will participate in all shared governance duties.

 

EXPECTATIONS OF DIRECTORS

Board Directors are expected to be familiar with and meet the general requirements of a company director set out by the Australian Charities and Not-for-Profit Commission (ACNC).

Tender Funerals expectations of Board Directors include:

  • Being kind, ethical and committed to a community-based model of service provision
  • Being fully prepared for, and constructively contributing to monthly Board meetings and planning sessions
  • Contribute to strategic, operational and financial decision-making as appropriate
  • Participating in sub-committees / working groups as required
  • Taking on a portfolio role as and when required
  • Attending networking events whenever possible
  • Dealing with “out of session” issues, by email or teleconference
  • Representing Tender Funerals to the broader community
  • Provide oversight and guidance for Tender Funerals operations once established, ensuring appropriate frameworks are in place to monitor, mitigate and manage risks

 

DESIRED PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES OF DIRECTORS

  • Team player with strong communication skills
  • Attention to detail, good problem solving and analytical skills  
  • Self-motivated, organised and outcome focused
  • Ability and willingness to challenge and probe

 

TIME COMMITMENT REQUIRED:

Attendance at Board Meetings once a month (2 hours) plus time for report preparation, accounts reconciliation and financial administration.

 

DURATION OF TENURE:

Minimum 2 year term.

 

QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  • Experience in finance/accounting and working knowledge of related legislation (required) 
  • Experience in NFP sector (highly desirable) 
  • CA/CPA or similar qualification (highly desirable) 
  • Previous board experience (highly desirable) 
  • AICD certification 2 (desirable)

The original Tender Funerals (Illawarra & Sydney) was established in 2016. Tender Funerals Australia was then established as a NFP to support and resource a network of sites around the country. These are in various stages of development and all have an ethos of community involvement. Importantly, this unique social franchising agreement binds network members to operate in accordance with the principles of the Tender Funerals Credo, Vision, business model and manual.
