About the role
Buddhist self help organisation requires a volunteer part time librarian to assist us manage a rare and extensive collection of Buddhist texts, journals and artefacts. The collection includes about 6,000 texts of which approximately 4,000 have been catalogued and is housed in a library area with good facilities. The organisation is an associated institution of the World Buddhist University and has a significant online presence including an online library catalogue.
The position includes working with two part time volunteer librarians one of whom is fully qualified and the other has no formal training but loves libraries. Previous experience is preferred but not essential as onsite training will be given for this role.
The main activities are to help complete an online catalogue of the collection and to catalogue books using standard Dewey cataloguing system.
About the organisation
Located in the outer Eastern suburbs of Melbourne the Buddhist Discussion Centre Australia is a home grown Australian Buddhist temple supporting the study, practice, realisation and preservation of Buddhist Teachings.
Our activities include publishing Buddhist Teachings, conducting courses and classes in Buddhism and Buddhist meditation, running children's classes in Buddhism and Chan painting classes. We are an Associated Institution of the World Buddhist University.
Our philanthropic activities include supporting an orphanage and trade school for approximately 500 children in Bangladesh.
