The ACNC has a new acting commissioner, but filling the position permanently may still be some time away.
Australian Tax Office (ATO) deputy commissioner for small business Deborah Jenkins is the new acting commissioner of The Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC).
Out-going commissioner Dr Gary Johns will step down at the end of this month.
The role was appointed by federal Assistant Minister for Competition, Charities and Treasury Andrew Leigh.
Jenkins has been with the ATO for almost seven years having spent 15 years working in tax for KPMG.
It is expected the recruitment process will take several months to complete, with public advertising of the role yet to take place.
News that Johns was stepping down was welcomed by many in the sector after a mixed tenure.
CEO of the Community Council for Australia (CCA) David Crosbie said Johns has been a long-time critic of charities and his appointment was a “surprise to the sector.”
