Pro Bono News appoints a new editor
22 June 2022 at 1:33 pm

We are excited to announce that journalist Isabelle Oderberg will be joining the organisation.

Pro Bono News is pleased to announce that Isabelle Oderberg will be joining the team as editor from 28 June.

She replaces Wendy Williams, who will shortly be going on maternity leave until March 2023.

Among her many accomplishments, Oderberg, who has almost two decades of journalism experience, was the founding news editor of Business Spectator and later the country’s first social media editor.

She also has experience working across the not-for-profit sector having taken on roles as social media lead for Australian Red Cross, senior media advisor for Council to Homeless Persons and Homelessness Australia, and manager of communications and media strategy for the Public Interest Journalism Initiative.

Oderberg said: “It’s an absolute privilege to be coming on board to drive Pro Bono Australia while Wendy Williams takes a well-deserved break. I’ll be working with a team truly at the top of its game.

“Pro Bono Australia is a stalwart in an industry in which I have been proud to work for almost a decade and while we have big plans in store, our focus, as always, will be on telling the stories our sector needs to hear. I look forward to engaging with as wide a range of people as possible across the not-for-profit landscape.”

Pro Bono Australia CEO and founder Karen Mahlab AM said she was delighted to welcome Oderberg to the team.

“I am thrilled that Isy has taken up the position of editor of Pro Bono News. I have known her for some time through her work at The Public Interest Journalism Initiative,” Mahlab said.

“This is an exciting moment for the for-purpose sector which has truly come of age in the post-pandemic rethink of priorities and now with an extra overlay of a new Australian government. It is also an exciting time for Pro Bono News which has spent two decades holding the space for the emergence of the for-purpose sector.

“We are looking to assert ourselves as the go-to news organisation for everything for-purpose. I believe Isy can help us do that.”

Williams, who has been at Pro Bono News since 2016, also congratulated Oderberg on her appointment.

“Isy is an incredible journalist with a wealth of experience and knowledge about the social sector. I have every confidence she is the right person to carry the news team forward over the next period,” Williams said.

“I look forward to seeing what she can achieve.”
