“Membership provides us with a solid foundation to maintain high standards of practice”

Pro Bono News is excited to announce it has been accepted as a member of the Australian Press Council.

The Press Council, established in 1976, is responsible for promoting good standards of media practice, community access to information of public interest, and freedom of expression through the media.

Pro Bono News now joins hundreds of other print and online media outlets that have committed themselves to the Press Council’s high standards of practice and its mission to advocate for press freedom and freedom of speech.

Pro Bono News editor Wendy Williams said the organisation was delighted to be admitted.

“Membership gives our readers the reassurance of a strong complaints-handling process and provides us with a solid foundation to maintain high standards of practice,” Williams said.

The Press Council also welcomed small publisher The Urban Developer and new council member Hartley Higgins.

Press Council chair Neville Stevens AO said the new members demonstrated the council’s ongoing commitment to support smaller, specialist online publications.

“Their membership is an expression of confidence in the council and signals the growing importance of digital publications in a rapidly changing media landscape,” he said.
