US Cuts Fundraising Red Tape

The United States is cutting red tape and increasing transparency for charities through a single national charity registration system.
The opening of the state charity registration portal on Sunday allows US not for profits to comply with all states’ registration and annual filing requirements in a single place.
With 39 US states requiring charities to register before raising money, NFPs are forced to spend significant time navigating state-by-state reporting obligations.
This led the National Association of State Charity Officials, the Multistate Registration and Filing Portal, GuideStar, and CityBase to develop a single filing portal.

Josh Goldstein, the VP of product at CityBase, said the current registration and reporting process was time-consuming and complicated.
“The portal will save charities time by capturing this information in one place,” Goldstein said.
President and CEO of GuideStar, Jacob Harold said they were working with state charity offices to help them use this registration data in their work.
He said the portal would also help increase transparency in the sector.
“[We will] make much of the registration data, minus private information, available for download,” Harold said.
“Researchers, policy makers, and the public will be able to use this open data to learn more about the sector.”
The move comes amid a long-running push in Australia to harmonise fundraising regulations through the creation of a nationally-consistent fundraising regime.
