Global Connectivity Driving Overseas Giving

The ease of global connectivity and a preference toward online giving means almost a third of donors worldwide are now giving to overseas organisations, new research shows.
The second annual Global Trends in Giving Report, released by Public Interest Registry and Nonprofit Tech for Good, surveyed more than 6,000 donors in 119 countries.
It found 31 per cent of donors worldwide gave to organisations outside their country of residence, while more than half of donors (54 per cent) said they preferred to give online via credit or debit cards.
Facebook remained the platform that inspired the most donations at 56 per cent, followed by Instagram (20 per cent) and Twitter (13 per cent).
James LeFevre, senior director of marketing for Public Interest Registry said: “Advancements in and increased availability of technology, especially in emerging regions around the world, are helping to fuel both the propensity for philanthropy and the preference to give through online channels.”

Looking at the break down of data by region, donors in Australia (76 per cent), South America (71 per cent) and North America (70 per cent) were mostly female, while in Asia only 51 per cent of donors were female.
It was also revealed that millennials (born from 1981 to 1997) were the most giving generation, making up 32 per cent of all donors.
Heather Mansfield, the founder of Nonprofit Tech for Good, said the report made clear online giving was the future of philanthropy.
“We’re seeing millennials driving the next generation of giving all over the world, as in most emerging regions the first to come online are younger generations who aspire to connect with and make a difference in the world around them,” Mansfield said.
