Professional Development Workshops for the Not-for-Profit and Public Sector

As the leading contemporary arts centre in Melbourne’s West, Footscray Community Arts Centre works closely with Indigenous, culturally and linguistically diverse and disability communities to develop their artistic potential as emerging leaders.

Due to this, it is uniquely placed to deliver professional development programs for the not-for-profit and public sector through its Generate workshop series.

Understanding ableism and access

Everyday discrimination and how it can be avoided

Due to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), the experience of people with perceived disabilities has come to the forefront of public policy and is paramount to understanding the complex and intersectional dynamics of life in an urban hub like Melbourne.

This workshop reveals an often hidden world of discrimination based on body and mind politics. Hear from expert speakers about myths surrounding ableism and how combating it paves the way for universal access.

Facilitators: Jax Jacki Brown and Amy McMurtrie 

When: Friday 13 July, 9:30am – 1:30pm

Ethics and self determination

Authorship and ownership

Learn how to develop programs and engage with culturally and linguistically diverse communities in ways that ensures respectful and self-determined relationships. Discover what “nothing about us, without us” means in the context of community engagement.

Facilitators: Tania Cañas (RISE Refugees)

When: Friday 24 August, 9:30am – 1:30pm

Cost: $250 organisation / $80 independent artists

Working in First Nations cultural contexts

Sovereignty, cultural competency and racial literacy

Are you currently working with Indigenous communities or hope to in the future? This workshop is designed to assist non-Indigenous workers find more effective ways of working in First Nations contexts.

Facilitators: Paola Balla (artist, Indigenous studies lecturer and Victorian Indigenous Art Award winner)

When: 16 to 17 and 19 October (three-day workshops)

Cost: $900 organisation / $630 independent artists

Evaluation

Effective evaluation models for community engaged practice

Can we measure and evaluate social change? What are the best models for your practice, project or organisation? Explore the practical ways to make evaluation more meaningful and effective.
