Finding Meaning on the Hamster Wheel? How is That Working for You?

Need to get off the hamster wheel? Upcoming Melbourne workshops by leading capacity building consultant Alison Coughlan have been designed for professionals engaged in purpose-driven work to help translate passion and purpose into impact.

The hamster wheel is a familiar metaphor. If only it existed in our lives purely as a useful metaphor for us to reflect on and learn from. That wheel has been a big part of our reality as we have spent many a year peddling away… if only we could do more… get this one thing done… stay that little bit longer… catch up on…

The hamster wheel literally describes the concept of running in circles but making no progress.

But help is at hand …

Join Alison Coughlan in Melbourne for her workshop: Getting to What Matters: Your Best Work, Your Best Life on 23  October 2017 and 24 November 2017 at 500 Bourke Street, Melbourne.

Are you finding yourself doing things the same way, repeating the same mistakes, guided by a sense that motion is the important thing – feeling like “we just need to keep going?” Somewhere along the way we can lose our connection to the meaning that inspired us to take that job or choose that career path and the satisfaction that we hoped to derive from meaningful work.

We are feeling exhausted, overwhelmed and no matter what we achieve, there is always more to do, people relying on us, unmet needs, gaps to fill – always more, more, more…

Can we sustain this?

Is it all worth it?

At what cost?

And so we contemplate…

What if we step off the wheel?

What if we stay on?

Cue fear!

Jim Carrey gave a speech at a University graduation ceremony where he talked about choosing love over fear:

“Fear is going to be a player in your life. But you get to decide how much. You can spend your whole life imagining ghosts, worrying about the pathway to the future – but all there will ever be is what’s happening here. And the decisions we make in this moment which are based in either love or fear.”

Choose to step off that wheel for just one day to think about what matters to you.

Choose kindness to yourself over fear.

Choose to make different choices that are more aligned and healthful for you – because you matter.

Create your own unique path to greater impact, meaning and satisfaction in your work.

You actually get to choose. In fact, you’re the only one who can.

Choose to step off the hamster wheel for one day to join Alison Coughlan in Melbourne for her workshop: Getting to What Matters: Your Best Work, Your Best Life.

This workshop applies some of the fundamental techniques we use in strategic planning for our organisations to you – because you matter and your capacity to sustain your practice is critical to achieving and sustaining meaningful impact.
