Women working in the disability sector are being called on to apply for new scholarships to access world-class governance education in a bid to drive an increase in the number of women on boards.

The Australian Institute of Company Directors has partnered with the federal government to offer 10 “board-ready” women full fee places to complete their Company Directors Course.

The Disability Sector Diversity Scholarships are aimed at supporting emerging and experienced female directors and senior executives to gain valuable governance skills and education, enabling them to be leaders in their organisations.

Scholarship recipients will also receive a 12 month complimentary AICD membership.

AICD chairman Elizabeth Proust AO said the Board Diversity Scholarship Program was one of a range of initiatives run by the AICD aimed at improving the gender diversity of Australian boards.

“Almost one in five Australians report living with a disability which means the disability services sector touches the lives of millions of Australians,” Proust said.

“We know that diversity on boards leads to better governance outcomes, which is why we’re proud to be able to offer this scholarship to support women working in the disability sector.

“I welcome the support of the Australian government for this program, which will give 10 Australian women the opportunity to access world-class governance education and in turn help their organisations assist the community.”

The scholarships are open to women in all Australian states and territories who work in a non-commercial organisation in the disability sector.

Applicants must be working in decision-making roles in service to the public in the disability sector.

Applications open on Friday and close at 5pm Monday 17 July 2017.

For more information see the AICD’s Board Diversity page.
