NGO Communications Launches Specialised Services for Australia’s Third Sector

Newly established consultancy, NGO Communications, is aiming to assist Australia’s not for profits and non-government organisations (NGOs) as they navigate an increasingly competitive funding environment.
Head of communications Benjamin Graham said the key to the sustainability of NGOs is the quality communication of what they can offer, what makes them the perfect fit for a client.
“Not for profits and NGOs are an important part of Australian society and represent people at the grassroots level,” Graham said.
“The long-term success of an organisation rests on its ability to define its point of difference, to develop its brand if you like, and to tell that brand’s story with conviction and purpose so it stands out from the crowd.”
Graham said shifting policy and funding frameworks, typified by the changes in National Disability Insurance Scheme funding – from those providing the service to those needing the service – meant some providers were left scrambling to let clients know what they could offer or, in some cases, that they even existed.
“Being able to clearly communicate how you are best placed to service your client base is the difference between success and failure.”
“It would be a great pity if we saw any of the current providers become extinct – and the market become homogenised – due to failure to communicate their unique features.”
Graham said the third sector is made up of organisations large and small and each one has an important role to play.
“These organisations are adept at delivering their core business but often don’t think of marketing until it’s too late.”
“My message is, bring in a communication specialist early, don’t wait until the patient is at the emergency department.”
Graham, who has worked in communication and marketing for some of Australia’s leading not for profits, peak bodies and associations for more than a decade, has started NGO Communications to assist such bodies continue to fill a vital role in the Australian community.
Services offered by NGO Communications include communication strategies and planning, membership acquisition and retention, media relations, event management, website and content development, social media, and general communications consultancy.
