Sydney Leadership is the Benevolent Society’s annual leadership program run by Social Leadership Australia.

Sydney Leadership’s unique approach to leadership development goes beyond technical expertise. The program combines cutting edge learning methodologies with world class facilitation and teaching which uses the Harvard Adaptive Leadership model as a mechanism for engaging with complex social issues and developing skills for exercising leadership for social impact.

The program is for people from across the NGO, corporate and government sectors who are authorised to lead change, often complex and adaptive change. People who are seeking new ways to exercise the type of leadership required to mobilise others for sustainable change.

Over five months Sydney Leadership will equip participants with the knowledge, skills, experience and networks they need to work successfully across sectors, diversity of cultures, values and perspectives to create real lasting change.

Participants will develop their capacity to:

• recognise and respond to complex, adaptive problems
• partner across sector, function and culture
• lead change in times of crisis and chaos or when faced with uncertainty and resistance
• develop high levels of community and cultural awareness and link this to organisational   efforts
• work with high self-awareness and clarity of purpose and values
• build resilience and confidence to lead in unfamiliar circumstances.

The Sydney Leadership program has been conducted since 1999 with 600 graduates. The Sydney Leadership alumni community is a strong and engaged life-long group. Graduates build relationships with other leaders from across private industry, government and not-for-profit sectors opening up new pathways to progress.

Clare Babbage, territorial manager of counselling and specialist services at the Salvation Army and Sydney Leadership alumnus, said: “I have learnt how to lead with compassion and curiosity, and empower teams. I have experienced consciously taking authority based on my learning and seen positive change in my workplace.”

Scholarship opportunities available

Applications are open for Sydney Leadership 2017 scholarships, for talented Australians who have the drive to tackle some of the most complex challenges facing our nation, but not the financial means to invest in their own development.
