Call for NFP Submissions on Services for Unpaid Carers

The federal government is calling for submissions on the draft service delivery model for services to support and sustain the work of unpaid carers.

Assistant Minister for Social Services and Disability Services Jane Prentice said the draft service delivery model set out a new integrated carer support system and outlined the types of services and how they were proposed to be delivered in the future.

“In 2015, an estimated 2.7 million Australians were carers, with 856,100 people aged more than 15 years identified as primary carers,” Prentice said.

“People who become carers are extraordinary individuals who make personal sacrifices, such as giving up work and study, to provide a level of care that is above and beyond.

“The focus of the draft service delivery model is to provide more services to more carers, with a focus on supporting carers earlier.

“This means providing supports that build their capacity, reduce strain, enable increased participation and ultimately improve their wellbeing.”

As part of the 2015/16 budget, the coalition government announced the development of an integrated plan for carer support services.

The first phase of the plan commenced in December 2015 with the implementation of carer gateway which helps carers access information about support available through a website, national phone service and interactive service finder.

The government said the second phase of the plan involved developing a new integrated carer support service system through a co-design process.

Prentice said continued public consultation was important to ensure the community has their say on the best way to deliver carer services and support.

“The opinions of carers, peak bodies and service providers are integral to the collaboration process and I encourage them to share their views,” she said.

Feedback on the draft service delivery model can be provided by participation in an online survey, or through making a written submission. The survey and submission process is open from 6 November 2016 at 10am and will close on 15 December at 5pm.

Prentice said that once finalised, the draft service delivery model will form the basis of a proposal for government consideration.
