National cancer charity Redkite is offering up scholarships to young Australians who have cancer or are cancer survivors, to help them realise their dreams to pursue education, career and life goals.

The Dare to Dream Scholarships are valued at $5,000, and $2,000 and are available to Australians aged 15 to 24.

Redkite CEO Jenni Seton encouraged teenagers and young adults who may have put their ambitions on hold through cancer treatment, to apply for the scholarships.

“In 2016 Redkite and Coles will provide up to 40 scholarships across Australia,” Seton said.

Last year’s recipients included Tom from Port Macquarie in New South Wales, whose diagnosis with Lymphoma at the age of 15 meant he had to give up intensive swimming training.

Now 16, Tom used his scholarship to buy an exercise bike to maintain his fitness during chemotherapy which led to him winning a silver medal at the national age swimming championships in March this year.

Last year’s national winner Tristian, a 19-year-old cancer survivor from Port Macquarie who has a passion for music, said the scholarship offered invaluable support for young people.

“After cancer, it’s exactly the kind of kickstart I needed to help make my lifelong dream become a reality,” Tristian said.

Previous recipients have used the scholarships to complete university degrees, train for elite sports and develop small businesses.

Coles managing director John Durkan said the Redkite and Coles Dare to Dream Scholarship recipients were remarkable for their ability to overcome setbacks in education, experience and confidence.

“We’re proud to help support such brave and ambitious young individuals achieve their dreams. We believe the scholarships can play a vital role in shaping their future, by giving them the confidence to pursue their studies and embark on a rewarding career path,” Durkan said.

Dare to Dream Scholarship entries can be submitted in any format. In past years this has included written applications, animations, songs, news articles about the applicant five years from now, a business case, a poem or graphic design.

Applications for this year’s Redkite and Coles Dare to Dream Scholarships close on 29 July 2016.
