Twenty-three Australians charity workers, in fields as diverse as children’s cancer, homelessness, disability and animal welfare, have shared in grants worth over A$1 million from US based philanthropic organisation, Newman’s Own Foundation.

The foundation, set up by renowned actor Paul Newman, said charities were invited to nominate individuals from within their organisations whose work had empowered others to overcome extraordinarily adverse circumstances, or provided equal access to human rights and contributed to the development of a civil society.

The foundation’s Australian advisor, Dimity Pinto, said the nominations were available to anyone who had demonstrated the effort to go that extra distance to help others transform their lives.

“Narrowing down the applications to the final 23 nominees and their projects was extremely challenging,” Pinto said.

“We were overwhelmed by the heartfelt and inspirational stories from charitable organisations around Australia with the nominees ranging from founders of charities, to case workers and even part time volunteers.”

President and CEO of Newman’s Own Foundation, Robert Forrester, said all of the chosen recipients followed in the footsteps of Paul Newman as evidenced through their determination to make a difference to the underserved or disadvantaged in our communities.

“Paul Newman believed we all have the opportunity to improve the lives of others and this year we sought individuals from within charitable organisations who have demonstrated a ongoing commitment to empowering those less fortunate,” Forrester said.

Newman’s Own Foundation turns all net profits and royalties from the sale of Paul Newman’s Own products into charitable donations.

To date, Newman’s Own Foundation have given nearly US$450 million to thousands of charities around the world including US$20 million to Australian charities.
