The Australian public is being asked to vote online to decide which 19 shortlisted local community projects to get kids to be more physically active will be awarded a share in half a million dollars from the Medibank Community Fund.

The grants will directly support programs that get children and young people moving outside of school.

Australians can have their say online to determine which Not for Profit organisations will receive the funding.

Medibank General Manager of Wellbeing and Community, Karen Oldaker, said that shortlisting just 19 projects from more than 300 applications was tough, but not as challenging as the Australian public’s role in deciding where the 2016 community grants will be invested.

“From hip hop dance troops to nighttime basketball tournaments, community groups from as far and wide as Mountain Creek in Queensland, Alice Springs in the Northern Territory and Floreat in WA have submitted fantastic grant applications,” Oldaker said.

“This year’s shortlisted programs, which help encourage children and young Australians to be more physically active outside of school, are incredibly innovative and engaging, and we urge Aussies to have the final say by voting online.

“Community groups are pivotal to ensuring kids get moving outside of school hours, with the shortlisted projects expected to impact the lives of thousands of children nationwide.”

Online voting is open until midnight on 20 November 2015, and the successful projects will be announced on 25 November 2015.

Through the Medibank Community Fund, $500,000 is set aside by Medibank each year to fund health and wellbeing projects that help people help themselves to better health and wellbeing.
