Recording Volunteer Contributions

New Australian research is set to investigate the extent to which Not for Profit organisations currently record and report on their volunteer-contributed services.
Researcher Stuart Tooley, an Associate Professor within the QUT School of Accountancy, has set up an online survey as part of his research.
“For many Not for Profit organisations the impact and notional economic value of volunteer contributions whilst significant, remains largely invisible.
“Although the contribution of volunteers to society as a whole is being recognised at a national level, reporting and disclosure at an organisational level is less obvious.
“Arguably, such invisibility may imply, albeit incorrectly, that volunteers have zero impact on the operating capability of the organisation. Therefore, it is contended that organisational recording and reporting of volunteer contributions would provide a more complete account of such a key resource and would reflect more appropriately the value of volunteers to the ongoing sustainability of NFP organisations and to the community it serves.”
Tooley said the objective of the research project is to investigate to what extent NFP organisations currently record and report contributed services and to explore the motivations that underpin current practices.
“To achieve this objective an online survey is targeted to senior management in particular, CEOs, of Not for Profit organisations will be the primary research instrument.”
The research results are expected to be released in time for National Volunteer Week.
