Optus RockCorps 2014 Seeking Charities
28 November 2013 at 9:07 am
The award-winning Optus RockCorps youth volunteering initiative (Best Charity/Cause Related Event 2013) is seeking charities or community organisations to work with for its 2014 projects season.
Optus RockCorps offers charities or community groups a chance to transform their community centre with a fresh lick of paint, a colourful mural or some gardening. Optus RockCorps recruits the volunteers and provides supervision, materials and tools. The charity or community organisation simply hosts the project at their centre. Projects go for four hours and need to involve at least 60 volunteers.
RockCorps is a global youth volunteer movement that uses the power of music to engage, empower and celebrate youth giving back to the community. In 2013, RockCorps launched for the first time in Australia, in partnership with Optus.
Optus RockCorps offers young people a music reward in exchange for ‘giving back’ four hours of volunteer work at a local community organisation or charity. The volunteers do fun, creative and simple activities – such as mural painting or gardening.
In summer 2013, Optus RockCorps worked with over 5,000 volunteers at more than 65 community centres. Over 20,000 hours of community service were given to provide a bit of colour, freshness and sparkle back into community centres across Sydney.
St Vincent de Paul Society NSW worked with Optus RockCorps on a project in the Inner West in March 2013. More than 70 Optus RockCorps volunteers brightened up the accommodation service by painting and gardening over a fun four hours.
“Optus RockCorps demonstrated a high level of logistical organisation from beginning to end. The project management of the activity was excellent, and the cohesion and teamwork of the Optus RockCorps supervisors and coordinators contributed to an excellent outcome.
“Optus RockCorps were true in their word in what could be achieved, and delivered on that commitment. Such a new and fresh initiative, it has certainly demonstrated what can be achieved with young people and our imagination.” – Andrew Kelly, St Vincent de Paul Society
Optus RockCorps projects will be coming back to Sydney in summer 2014, with projects between January and March. Optus RockCorps are seeking charities or community organisations who would like to be involved.
