ACNC Debate at Associations Forum National Conference

The Closing Plenary of the 2013 Associations Forum National Conference will feature a panel debate on whether or not the Australian Charities and Not-for-Profits Commission (ACNC) has been successful in its aims.
ACNC Chair Robert Fitzgerald AM, and Shadow Minister for Families, Housing and Human Services Kevin Andrews MP, will join in debate at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre on July 17, 2013.
The ACNC’s aims include enhancing public trust in charities, supporting and sustaining the NFP sector and promoting the reduction of unnecessary regulatory obligations.
The panel will look at whether these aims have been met while also discussing the Federal Opposition’s alternative plans for the sector and debating whether the ACNC should be expanded to non-charity associations.
Conference organisers said the debate will generate a timely discussion with the Statutory Definition of Charity Bill passing through the Senate on June 27, 2013. Meanwhile, the Federal Opposition has vowed to abolish the ACNC if it gains office at the next election.
The panelists include Corporate and Legal Issues Committee Member for Chartered Secretaries Australia Tim Timchur, CEO of the Australasian Corrosion Association Ian Booth, and General Secretary of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference Friar Brian Lucas.
