Living in a Not for Profit World in 2050?

A group of pro-active changemakers is compiling a book which will look at the prospect of Not for Profit enterprise becoming the central model of local, national and international business, by 2050.

The group, from the Sydney-based Post Growth Institute, and made up of eight researchers and community workers from around the world, says it is creating a new formula for economic sustainability, looking at innovation and how Not for Profit enterprise can be the primary business model on the local, national and international business scales by 2050.

Lead author of the book, Dr Donnie Maclurcan said a large number of people were coming to the realisation that any economic system that centralises wealth and power is, ultimately, socially and ecologically unsustainable.

“So many good things are happening [in the world] so why is our world such a mess?," he said.
“Economic growth has become uneconomic growth, driving up inequality and eroding natural resources faster than nature can replace them.

“Gains in technological efficiency alone can’t fix things.

“If we are to survive and thrive we must evolve to a system beyond economic growth.”

The group at the Post Growth Institute is gathering information for its book to be titled: How on Earth: Flourishing in a Not for Profit World by 2050 which will look at how society can live an abundant life in a Not for Profit world.

The Post Growth group believes people are increasingly becoming fed up with excessive executive salaries, a financial sector divorced from the real world, corporations with more say than people, endless spin from politicians and entrepreneurs about the latest technological ‘solution’, and the trappings of “mindless consumption”.

The group is focused on what it refers to as “a real alternative” – where a Not for Profit economy will change the game by decentralising wealth and power, while maintaining incentives for innovation and increasing people’s desire for meaningful work.

The book, which is expected to be published as a final manuscript by the end of the year, will look at the power of Not for Profit, making a smart shift to Not for Profit existence and accelerating the trend to a Not for Profit world.

The group has created a crowdfunding campaign to fund the book and has raised more than $16,000 of its $20,000 goal with just three days left on the campaign.
