Community Food Grants

Not for Profit community gardens, farmers markets and food rescue organisations are set to benefit from $1.5 million in grants from the Federal Government.

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Senator Joe Ludwig, has opened the Community Food Grant program, which is part of the National Food Plan.

Community Food Grants are open to Not for Profit organisations, including farmers’ markets, food rescue organisations, charities and cooperative societies. Grants of up to $10,000 will be available for community gardens, city farms and similar activities, and up to $25,000 for farmers’ markets, food rescue and similar activities.

“This is an opportunity for Not for Profit groups to bring local communities together to grow, prepare and share food,” Minister Ludwig said.

“These grants will also support groups who tackle food waste.”

The Community Food Grant program was one of the initiatives announced as part of the National Food Plan released in May 2013.

“The program supports projects which aim to build networks, connect farmers and consumers, improve knowledge about food production and preparation, improve knowledge about how food is grown and to help provide surplus safe and nutritious food to disadvantaged groups.

“The Community Food Grant program will provide the funding needed to help Not for Profit groups put great food initiatives and ideas into practice,” Minister Ludwig said.
