Individuals, organisations and community groups across Melbourne are being encouraged to nominate for the prestigious Melbourne Awards.

The Melbourne Awards honour the city’s high achievers and community heroes, recognising their outstanding contributions in the areas of sustainability, community and the profile of Melbourne.

Now in its 11th year, Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said the awards highlight people that have helped make Melbourne the exciting and diverse city it is.

“The recipients are often people who don’t seek recognition in their day-to-day life, but whose effort and determination make Melbourne one of the world?s most desirable and unique cities to live, visit and work,” the Lord Mayor said.

The Awards are given in three categories:

Contribution to Community – projects or activities that enhance the lives of residents and workers through new approaches to community services and volunteer work, improvements to accessibility, developments in architecture and design, or improvements to parks, gardens and open spaces.

Contribution to Sustainability – projects, events or activities that create a more environmentally sustainable city through advancements in sustainable innovation and design or the development of new environmental projects or programs.

Contribution to Profile – projects or activities that have built Melbourne’s reputation as a national centre for business, knowledge, innovation, sport, shopping, entertainment, food and culture.

Included in the Awards program is the Melburnian of the Year; an honour bestowed on an inspirational individual for their significant contribution to the community.

Winners will be announced at a special Gala Ceremony at Town Hall in November.

Past winners of the Melburnian of the Year include:

Harold Mitchell AC – Founder, Harold Mitchell Foundation,
Jim Stynes – Co-Founder, Reach and AFL great
Susan Barton – Director and Founder, Lighthouse Foundation
John Bertrand – Chairman, Alannah and Madeline Foundation,
Lyn Swinburne – Founder, Breast Cancer Network Australia

Nominations for the 2013 Melbourne Awards close 17 June 2013. For more information about the awards and to nominate, please visit: www.melbourne.vic.gov.au/melbourneawards or call 9658 9658.
