The sister of US billionaire Warren Buffett has launched GivingWithPurpose, described as the first ever Open Online Course on effective charitable giving.

Doris Buffett who established The LearningbyGivingFoundation has launched MOOC – the Massive Open Online Course – a free course she says offers everyone the opportunity to make real grants using the Foundation’s money.

The M.O.O.C. is comprised of six classes that provide tools and strategies to help students invest their charitable dollars effectively.

Lessons are complemented by interviews with guest speakers including Warren Buffett, Doris Buffett, Cal Ripken, Jr., Soledad O’Brien, Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield.

“‘Giving With Purpose” allows us to extend the classroom walls to include any individual passionate about philanthropy. There are thousands of people with the energy and passion to make a difference, this course teaches how to give effectively and provides the capital to make it happen.” Doris Buffett, first benefactor and Founder of the LearningbyGivingFoundation said.

GivingWithPurpose has been developed on CourseBuilder, an open source project led by Google.

“The Course Builder project was put in motion because Google believes it can contribute to the rapidly changing area of open education and they are making this knowledge available to the world so that others may build M.O.O.C.s.

Doris Buffett created the first LearningbyGivingFoundation program in 2003 and has since partnered with over 30 colleges and universities around the country. Each class receives a $10,000 grant for the students to distribute to local Not for Profit organisations.

“Through the program, the Foundation encourages the teaching of philanthropy while simultaneously making charitable investments to people and communities in need,” Buffett said.

The Foundation says the MOOC online program will operate on the same principles as the established college program.

Pre-registration is now open on LearningbyGivingFoundation’s website – www.learningbygivingfoundation.org.
