Self Directed Approaches Conference
5 March 2013 at 9:07 am
In recent years Australia’s disability services sector has been moving towards self-directed approaches. Now, with an imminent NDIS, transitioning has become a top priority and will be discussed at a national conference in Sydney later this month.
Organisers says a self-directed approach gives people with disability and their families more choice and control over their support. It has the potential to transform lives.
“Self-directed funding is already partly implemented in some Australian states, and common in the United Kingdom and the United States. There is widespread and compelling evidence that it leads to good outcomes… Under the NDIS the pace of adoption of self-directed funding can be expected to grow…” Productivity Commission, Disability Care and Support, 31 July 2011
This nationally focused conference has been designed to provide those organisations making the move towards self-directed approaches with advice on how to do this most effectively.
It will do this through a series of presentations from leading thinkers, consumers, carers and those organisations making progress in this space.
The conference will cover:
- Planning for the transition
- Building the capacity of consumers, carers and staff
- Supporting people with complex needs to self-direct
- Ensuring effectiveness in a consumer-driven market place
- International experience
The conference is aimed at Government and NGO representatives with responsibility for: Disability Services, Self-directed approaches. Person-centred approaches, Individualised funding, Community services, Aged care services and Mental health services.
Key speakers include Rhonda Galbally, Chair National People with Disability and Carers Advisory Council & Deputy Chair NDIS Advisory Group as well as Janet Dore, the Chief Executive Officer Transport Accident Commission, in Victoria.
The conference will take place on the 19th & 20th March 2013, Citigate Central, Sydney. Pro Bono Australia is a media partner.
