Government Announces New Name for NDIS

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is to get a name change to ‘DisabilityCare Australia’ following the NDIS Bill passing the House of Representatives in Parliament.
The Minister for Disability Reform Jenny Macklin said that the new name reflects the principles of the NDIS that all Australians with significant or profound disability receive the care and support they need, regardless of how they acquired that disability.
“The name has been chosen based on consultations with people with disability, their families and carers, peak organisations and the general public,” Macklin said in a statement.
Macklin said that the new name is just another step towards the care and support of the legislation which is about to become real for Australians with disability and their families.
The NDIS legislation was passed in the House of Representatives following a series of amendments introduced by the Federal Government.
Amendments included clarification that all people who are NDIS participants will be able to choose to remain in the scheme after they turn 65 and changes to the compensation provisions so that the NDIS Launch Transition Agency can conduct legal proceedings on behalf of a person with disability.
The Bill will now be considered in the Senate before it becomes law.
