The Australian arm of a global human rights charity is the first organisation to officially register with the new national charity regulator, the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission – the ACNC.

The charity, STOP THE TRAFFIK, describes itself as a coalition of organisations that aims to put an end to human trafficking and modern slavery around the world.

The newly appointed ACNC Commissioner Susan Pascoe announced the first registration at the official launch of the ACNC in Melbourne on Monday.

“It’s a fantastic cause and I’m pleased to report that they had a good experience in registering with the ACNC,” Pascoe said.

In Australia the organisation has focused on campaigns to remove slave labor in the production of cocoa beans and chocolate, excluding Uzbekistan cotton from supply chains around the world and a campaign to get the Federal Government to reassess the laws around the importation of products that might have used human trafficking.

STOP THE TRAFFIK Coordinator, Carolyn Kitto, said the ACNC advertised itself as a one-stop-shop and it has delivered.

“STOP THE TRAFFICK has only just become incorporated in Australia and I expected the registration process to be a nightmare of paperwork,” Kitto said. ”However, I had attended a workshop and was inspired to go online and have a go.”

“And, it was really straight forward.

“There did appear to be a few things to tidy up and ACNC employee Tim Liu rang me to say the ATO and ASIC had registered the organisation as different sorts of companies.

“He offered to sort this out and to my surprise it was fixed in a day,” Kitto said.

The ACNC is Australia’s first national, independent, regulator of charities; responsible for registering organisations as charities and to support them to understand and meet their obligations.

The ACNC’s official launch took place yesterday in Melbourne at Charcoal Lane, Mission Australia’s Not for Profit restaurant that provides hands-on work experience and training to Aboriginal and disadvantaged young people.

Contact the ACNC by calling 13 ACNC (13 22 62), emailing advice@acnc.gov.au or visit the website www.acnc.gov.au.
