Leza Sullivan, Therapeutic Services Manager for Bravehearts, is profiled in Changemakers – a regular column which examines inspiring people and their careers in the Not for Profit sector.
Bravehearts is a national charity which aims to 'Break the Silence', provide healing and support, engender child sexual assault prevention and protection strategies; advocate for understanding and promote increased education and research.
What are you currently working on in your organisation?
Currently converting our professional development program for professionals working with children and young people who have been sexually assaulted, which is currently delivered face to face into an online training package. This involves the development of a learning management system and interactive activities and content to ensure the participant is engaged and is able to increase their skills, knowledge and confidence n working with this issue.
How long have you been working in the Not for Profit sector?
I have worked for 6 years in the Not for Profit sector, however in between my Not for Profit jobs I worked for 5 years as a psychologist in private practice, managing several contracts across Queensland.
What was your first job in the Not for Profit sector?
First position was as the Psychologist and Practice Manager of a community counselling centre. This was a new service and I was responsible for its set up, from painting walls to marketing, fundraising, grant writing, counselling and staff recruitment. It was a steep learning curve but one that I am very grateful for.
What is the best thing about working in the Not for Profit sector?
We get the chance to make a real difference, where the focus is not on generating a profit but rather on positive outcomes for children and their families.
What (or who) inspires you?
Bravehearts Founder and Executive Director Hetty Johnston. She is a fierce and tireless advocate for Australian children and is a shining example of how one person with an idea can make a big difference to so many people. Leadership is so important and she is an inspiring leader; always on the go; always pushing harder and evolving ideas.
