Campaigner Named as ACT’s Aussie of the Year

Social justice campaigner and Australian Social Inclusion Board Member, Dr Tom Calma AO, has been announced as the ACT Australian of the Year 2013.
The accolade comes just a few months after Calma was awarded the Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in the Queen's Birthday 2012 Honours.
Making the announcement overnight, ACT chief minister Katy Gallagher said that for more than four decades, Calma has championed the importance of empowerment – a passion which runs through his work in education, training, employment, health, justice, reinvestment and development.
"Formerly the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner and Race Discrimination Commissioner, Dr Calma has dedicated his life to improving the lives of Indigenous Australians,” Gallagher said.
“He continues to work to advance Australia as an inclusive society including many roles in the community relating to social inclusion, reconciliation, mental health and higher education.
Finalists for the ACT Australian of the Year included Gordon Gregory OAM – rural health advocate, Libby Lloyd AM – human rights activist and Dr Ken Henry AC – government advisor.
“The Australian of the Year Awards allows us to take time to focus on the many Australians who put their community and their country before themselves," Gallagher said. .
“They have made significant contributions to the betterment of our nation and I am sure their achievements will inspire others to think about how they might use their own skills, talents, knowledge, or time to strive for an even better Australia.”
The winners of the awards from each category will be presented at the national awards in Canberra on Australia Day Eve as part of the Australia Day celebrations.
