Global internet search engine Google has partnered with a national children’s charity, The Alannah and Madeline Foundation, in a campaign to help Australians stay safe online.

The Good to Know campaign aims to help Australians to stay safe on the internet and manage the information they share online.

“It is important that all members of the community are equipped with knowledge and understanding of good cybersafety practice to be smart, safe and responsible online,” the CEO of The Alannah and Madeline Foundation Dr Judith Slocombe said.

“The Good to Know campaign gives useful hints and tips that are easy to remember and put into action. For example, people are prompted to use Google SafeSearch, a setting that lets you exclude explicit content from your search results.”

Ishtar Vij from Google Australia said they would be rolling out extensive promotion efforts nationally, including:
? Distribution of Good to Know booklets in partnership with government departments to schools and libraries across the nation.
? Outdoor promotions in key transport hubs, such as most major train stations across Sydney and Melbourne.
? Print and online promotions across a range of media outlets.

“Google is excited to be partnering with The Alannah and Madeline Foundation to deliver such a large scale cyber-safety initiative,” Vij said.

The Alannah and Madeline Foundation was set up in honour of Alannah and Madeline Mikac, aged six and three, who along with their mother, died in the Port Arthur killings in April 1996.

The national charity operates with the belief that all children should have a safe and happy childhood without being subjected to any form of violence.

We definitely need more of such protection. The part of world where I come from, internet laws aren’t very strong and so on the advice of a friend some time back, I installed a software called qustodio. It provides a similar protection for my kids when they are venturing online. The online world needs to be a better place for our kids.
