Research to Look at Fundraising Leadership

Researchers at the Australian Centre for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Studies at Queensland University of Technology have begun a major investigation in the relationship between Not for Profit fundraisers and their Boards and CEOs.

Leader researcher Dr Wendy Scaife says the study examines leadership in fundraising from three perspectives – those in organisational leadership positions – board chairs and board members as well as CEOs in Not for Profit organisations and the dedicated paid fundraiser or fundraising teams.

“The experiences and opinions of these groups will be analysed and compared to reveal leadership issues, challenges and success factors of fundraising,” Dr Scaife said.

“From focus groups leading up to this survey we found a constant theme from fundraisers that they would like more direct help from their Boards in fundraising campaigns.

“We know that Not for Profit board members are often hard to find and wear a range of hats and often have little or no experience in fundraising.

“The survey will investigate what gaps in knowledge there might be from all three perspectives, around areas of recruitment, resourcing, management and many other aspects,” she said.

“We are asking for those in the Not for Profit sector to volunteer 30 minutes of their time to complete the survey which will be confidential and non-identifiable.”

The survey will be open until the end of 2012 with the results expected to be published in February/ March 2013.

The ACPNS Australian Nonprofit Leadership and Fundraising Survey is being funded by the Perpetual Foundation and the Gluyus and Corbould Trusts.
