Inaugural ACNC Commissioner Named
6 June 2012 at 5:30 pm

Susan Pascoe has been nominated as the inaugural Commissioner of the Australian Charities and Not-for-Profits Commission (ACNC).

The nomination came from the Minister for Social Inclusion Mark Butler and the Assistant Treasurer David Bradbury and is subject to approval by the Governor?General.

“Ms Pascoe has an outstanding record in both the private and public sectors, as well as a wealth of knowledge of the Not for Profit sector,” Bradbury said.

“Ms Pascoe has done a great job as Head of the ACNC Implementation Taskforce, and has been working closely with the sector to communicate the changes associated with the new regulator.”

“The Government looks forward to working with Ms Pascoe as it continues with its ambitious NFP reform agenda,” Butler said.

Pascoe said that she feels “privileged to be appointed to this role and I am looking forward to working with government and the not-for-profit sector to establish a world class regulator for the benefit of the Australian Community.”

She is currently the head of the Australian Charities and Not for Profits Commission Implementation Taskforce.

The Community Council for Australia (CCA) Chair and chief executive of World Vision Rev Tim Costello welcomed the announcement.

“The Community Council for Australia is delighted that Susan Pascoe is to take on the challenge of leading the first national regulator ever established for the charities and Not for Profit sector,” Costello said.

“Susan Pascoe knows this area, is respected by the Not for Profit sector and has the capacity to drive reform across government. It is a very good appointment.”

National Director of Not for Profit Uniting Care Australia Lin Hatfield Dodds said Pascoe has the “right background and experience” to head the Australian Charities and Not-for-Profits Commission (ACNC).

“During her role as Interim Commissioner Ms Pascoe has demonstrated a keen understanding and appreciation of the diverse nature of this sector. She is well placed to handle the complexities of regulating this large and increasingly important sector,” Hatfield Dodds said.

“Establishing a new national regulator for the not for profit sector will not be easy, but we are confident Ms Pascoe is the right person to lead the ACNC.”

Legislation is expected to be introduced this year that will bring into effect the Australian Charities and Not for Profits Commission (ACNC). The new Commissioner is expected to take office from 1 October 2012.
