It could be a script for a reality TV show but organisers of a corporate volunteer ‘makeover’ for a major welfare organisation say they are already on a winner.
Woodside Energy has joined forces with Mission Australia and reality TV renovation expert Christie Blizzard for a one-week makeover project.
Mission Australia's drug rehabilitation service in Western Australia is undergoing a one week makeover, thanks to volunteers from Woodside Energy who will not only fund the project, but also put their DIY skills to the test.
The Drug and Alcohol Youth Service (DAYS) Residential Rehabilitation Service provides supervised accommodation for young people with substance abuse problems. DAYS, which also has a detox unit in East Perth, is a partnership between the State Government’s Drug & Alcohol Office and Mission Australia.
The renovation project got underway on Monday, with professional interior designer Christie Blizzard from Channel Ten's The Renovators from lending her expertise. Current DAYS residents are spending a week on camp while the work is being carried out.
Mission Australia WA State Director Melissa Perry said the makeover was long overdue and she was looking forward to joining the volunteers at work.
"DAYS Residential Rehabilitation Service opened 10 years ago and has been operating at capacity ever since, so a fresh new look will be welcomed not only by the young people who stay there, but by the great people who work there," Perry said.
"Woodside Energy employees have done an outstanding job supporting Mission Australia over the past 11 years, raising well over $300,000 and giving so much of their time to help with projects like this.
"It's a wonderful relationship which demonstrates the great good that can be achieved in the community when corporate Australia lends its support to such a worthy cause."
More than 100 Woodside Energy volunteers have been involved in the project, which will see the building re-painted, fitted with modern new lighting, new tiles, floor coverings, beds, linen and desks.
DAYS Residential Rehabilitation Service is a 24/7 residential rehabilitation program offering intensive support through counseling and educational groups in areas such as substance abuse, legal issues and health.
