Community consultations about reform of the Not For Profit sector kick off at the end of this month – with the ACNC (Australian Charities and Not for Profits Commission) beginning a series of face to face consultations in all Australian capital cities.
The taskforce begins the process on January 30 and is seeking to meet with those enaged with the Not for Profirt sector and members of the public.
According to the taskforce website, the aim of the consultations will be:
- Listening and addressing concerns relating to the role of the ACNC
- Ensuring there is a high level of community involvement in the development of the ACNC
- Working with the sector to deliver a modern and effective regulator
The ACNC set up by the Gillard Government will be an independent regulator for the Not for Profit sector with a staff of around 90 officers, reporting to Parliament through the Treasurer.
Treasury will be responsible for policy and legislation with respect to regulation and taxation of the sector including: developing legislation for the ACNC, providing a statutory definition of “charity”, reviewing fundraising legislation and ‘Companies Limited by Guarantee’ and investigating reforms relating to tax concessions and public ancillary funds.
The Government has provided $53.6 million over four years for the establishment of the ACNC.
