Plibersek Announces Volunteering Advisory Group
9 December 2010 at 9:01 am

A Volunteer Advisory Group will be established as part of the Gillard Government’s plan to release a National Volunteering Strategy in 2011.

Making the announcement, Minister for Social Inclusion Tanya Plibersek says the Volunteer Advisory Group will provide expert advice on how to best encourage community service.

Plibersek says the advisory group will provide advice to the Government in the lead up to the release of the National Volunteering Strategy, which is to be released in 2011 as part of the ten year anniversary of the United Nations International Year of the Volunteer.

She says the strategy will assist the Government create an environment in which volunteering is encouraged, supported and properly recognised.

The advisory group replaces a similar group, the Volunteering Policy Advisory Group, which was setup in 2009 for the same purpose, but last met in July this year.

The Volunteering Policy Advisory Group was established by the Rudd Government in 2009 and chaired by then Parliamentary Secretary for Social Inclusion and the Voluntary Sector, Senator Ursula Stephens.

A spokesman for Minister Plibersek told AAP the new advisory group would have a narrower focus than the previous group, as it will specifically look at work to do for the celebrations for the 10-year anniversary of the 2001 Year of Volunteers.
