Online Cook-Off Helps Feed the Hungry

An Australian online social cooking competition site aims to provide 10,000 meals for people in need this Christmas by donation $1 for every dish uploaded.
Online ‘cook-off’ site 'Dish of the Day' is partnering with hunger relief organisation OzHarvest in a charity campaign that aims to increase awareness of food wastage and feed people in need.
For each dish uploaded onto website, Dish of the Day will donate $1 to OzHarvest – the same amount OzHarvest needs to provide a meal for someone in need. In other words, each dish uploaded to the website becomes a meal for a person who really needs it.
The Dish of the Day site allows users to share and showcase dishes they have cooked at home.
Kelvin Yip, Managing Director for Dish of the Day, says the site is a ‘cook-off’ site, rather than a recipe site. Yip says friendly rivalry led to the competitive ‘cook-off’ component of the site, which allows ordinary people to showcase their skills in the kitchen and share their unique dishes with the world.
OzHarvest is a non-denominational charity that rescues excess food which would otherwise be discarded. The excess food is distributed to Not for Profit organisations supporting the vulnerable in Sydney, Canberra, Newcastle and Adelaide.
