WA to Delivery Affordable Housing Strategy
7 October 2010 at 9:33 am

The West Australian Government says it will launch its affordable housing strategy before the end of 2010.

The strategy is based on 53 recommendations made by the Social Housing Taskforce report in October 2009.

The Government says the strategy aims to provide affordable housing to West Australians with some 20,000 houses new by 2020 through public and private partnerships.

The Social Housing Taskforce recommended reforms including collaboration with the private sector, assigning housing via a needs register, and making greater use of community housing.

The WA Government flagged its plans to launch the strategy at the announcement of Access Housing Australia Limited being awarded tenancy management of their 1,000th property in Western Australia this week.

WA Housing Minister, Bill Marmion says the Government continues to work with community housing providers to give them opportunities to build upon existing social housing stocks.

Marmion says that by engaging community housing providers, there is reduced pressure on the public housing waiting list by providing alternative, affordable housing options.

He says the Government is focused on providing affordable housing options for West Australians and working with community housing providers is an important element of this policy.

The six units, named ‘Millennium Mews’, handed over to Access Housing Australia Limited have been funded under the State Community Housing Investment Program on land owned by the Department of Housing.

The units are currently occupied by tenants from the joint community housing and Department of Housing waitlist.
