NFPs Asked to Join Reform Council

The Gillard  Government is seeking expressions of interest from the Not for Profit sector to join its Sector Reform Council – promised during the Federal Election campaign.

The acting Minister for Social Inclusion, Chris Bowen says the Government is committed to smarter regulation, reduced red-tape and improved transparency for the Not for Profit sector and the Reform Council will play an important role in advising the Government on non-profit sector reforms.

Bowen says the Gillard Labor Government recognises that a strong, productive and innovative non-profit sector is essential to building an inclusive Australia” Minister Bowen said.

He says the Reform Council will be supported by the Office for the Non-Profit Sector which has been established within the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet.

The Office will drive and coordinate the Not for Profit sector reform agenda within Government and oversee the implementation of the National Compact.

The Acting Minister says the Office will also support whole of government policy coordination on volunteering and report to the Minister for Social Inclusion, Tanya Plibersek.

Establishing the Reform Council and the Office fulfil recommendations contained in the Productivity Commission’s Research Report on the Contribution of the Non-for-Profit Sector.

The Acting Minister says the reforms build on the Government’s first term initiatives to support the sector through the National Compact, the introduction of a Standard Chart of Accounts and ongoing work with the States and Territories to progress the harmonisation of fundraising legislation.

The Government is seeking expressions of interest from leaders within the sector to provide advice on key reforms, as well as matters relevant to the NFP sector as a whole.

Expressions of Interest close on Sunday 31 October 2010 and further information can be found at
