Indigenous Advocacy NFP Makes Television History

A 13 year old girl has become the first person to deliver a public address on every free-to-air television network in Australia, calling on all Australians to work to end indigenous disadvantage.
The granddaughter of Aboriginal activist Charles Perkins, 13 year-old Madeleine Madden has urged all Australians to help end indigenous inequality on behalf of Not for Profit organisation, GenerationOne.
In a two minute message broadcast on Sunday night across every free to air and satellite TV network to an audience of 6 million, Madden called for the creation of real jobs and a better future for indigenous Australians.
The Not for Profit says this is the first time in Australian history that all media outlets have united and provided free, uninterrupted coverage of a non-political address to the nation.
GenerationOne says the value of this free air time provided by all free-to-air television networks and select pay TV channels totals more than $4.1 million.
GenerationOne CEO Tim Gartrell says the extraordinary efforts from the TV networks and agencies involved had enabled millions of Australians to hear Madeleine’s message to end Indigenous disparity in this country with real action.
Gartrell says GenerationOne has been overwhelmed by how generous media owners and agencies have been to make this campaign a success. It shows the depth of passion the Australian people share to end this terrible disparity between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.
The address has received wide ranging media coverage around Australia – with a story on the address being the most read article on news.com.au for 24 hours following the broadcast.
The address was broadcast on the ABC, SBS, Seven, Nine, Ten and Foxtel networks, and is backed up with online distribution, social media campaigns, full page ads in today’s News Limited newspapers and cinema advertising. All of the advertising has been provided free of charge to the organisation.
GenerationOne is a public awareness campaign aimed at closing the gap on indigenous disadvantage. GenerationOne was founded by mining magnate Andrew Forrest and his wife Nicola in 2010 to encourage all Australians to work together to make this the last generation to suffer Indigenous disparity.
