Major Australian Donor Invites His Friends To Give
22 June 2010 at 11:10 am

Inspiring a major donor to ask their friends to contribute requires a friendly personal approach and an increased sense of understanding of the Not for Profit and their work, according to one Australian philanthropist.

That's the advise of major donor, Ross Brewer in a six minute recorded interview with Relate Partners, as part of their Conversations With Major Donors.

The interview comes hot on the heels of one of the world's richest men, Warren Buffett, in the US encouraging his fellow billionaires to embrace philanthropic giving. Buffett, along with Microsoft founder Bill Gates recently launched "The Giving Pledge," an unprecedented effort to encourage hundreds of other billionaires to donate at least 50 percent of their wealth to charity.

In Australia, Ross Brewer talks freely about his personal experience of supporting Not for Profits, including how he came to gather a group of his friends to join in supporting a charitable work.

Nic Capp, a director of Relate Partners says that it is not uncommon for major donors, when engaged effectively, to be very willing to promote and advocate on behalf of organisations they support across their networks and sphere of influence.

As a philanthropist and supporter of a number of Not for Profits over many years, Brewer says once the relationship is established and the donors can understand a little bit more about an organisation's work, it is surprising how that process will give previously unimagined outcomes.

Relate Partners specialise in major donor personal engagement and conduct 'Conversations With Major Donors' to help inform the fundraising practice of Australian Not for Profit organisations.

We have used Relate Partners and seen the expertise with which they engage, and coach us to engage with supporters and donors. I don't know why so many organisations go on sending letters to people asking them for money, multiple times a year, when they really don't even know them. Surely by treating people as individuals and finding out what interests them and what they get excited about, one has much more chance of connecting them with a cause that 'fits' them?? Great job Relate Partners – you are pioneers! I hope lots of NFP's and regular businesses engage you to help them!!!
