New NFP Tax Initiative
8 February 2010 at 10:51 am
The Australian Tax Office (ATO) has developed a new initiative to help Not for Profit organisations understand their tax obligations and entitlement to tax concessions.
Over the next few months, the ATO says it will be calling a selection of organisations that recently obtained an Australian business number (ABN) and indicated on the ABN application they are a Not for Profit.
The ATO says the calls will be limited to organisations that do not use the services of a tax agent so it can support those more likely to require assistance.
During the calls, the ATO says it will discuss key areas such as Not for Profit status, income tax exemption, deductible gift recipient status, goods and services tax (GST) obligations and concessions and employer obligations.
The ATO will also take the opportunity to discuss the products and services it has to help Not for Profit organisations, such as:
- publications, including fact sheets, guides and rulings
- the area of our website specifically for NFP organisations at www.ato.gov.au/nonprofit
- an information line on 1300 130 248, which provides direct access to staff trained to handle NFP enquiries.
Organisations will also be invited to participate in a survey about the value of the calls.
