The world’s most recognisable online auction site, eBay has launched ‘eBay Give. Good. Green. Campaign’, a social-media focused initiative designed to encourage their 88 million buyers and sellers to ‘make a difference’ through a variety of activities on eBay.
The campaign is the first to link all five of the online company’s social initiatives – eBay Foundation, eBay Giving Works, MicroPlace, WorldofGood.com and the eBay Green Team.
eBay Inc. was founded on the belief that people are basically good, according to Robert Chatwani, Head of eBay Global Citizenship, who hopes that the Give. Good. Green. Campaign sheds some light on how eBay and its community can promote more sustainable commerce.
How it works – Interested parties visit the campaign website at www.ebaygivegoodgreen.com and can take action through the following:
eBay Giving Works – offers consumers many convenient and trusted ways to give to more than 19,000 nonprofits while they buy or sell on eBay. As of mid 2009, more than $126 million has been received worldwide through eBay Giving Works from eBay buyers and sellers. Sellers commit to donate a percentage of their listing’s sale price to the Not for Profit of their choice and their listings are then marked with a blue and yellow ribbon to inform potential buyers. eBay members with a PayPal account can also make an online donation to any Not for Profit in the Giving Works program.
WorldofGood.com– an online marketplace that connects consumers with ethically sourced and eco-friendly goods. Independent organisations called Trust Providers verify the positive impact of every product on people and the environment.
MicroPlace – enables individuals to make a difference in the fight against poverty by making investments that fund loans to the world’s working poor. After opening an account with MicroPlace, individuals are able to start providing MicroFinance loans with as little as $20. *MicroPlace is only available to US residents.
eBay Green Team – connects thousands of green-conscious eBay buyers and sellers, as well as providing detailed information on how to buy green, sell green and think green.
eBay Foundation – contributes to the economic and social well-being of local communities by engaging eBay employees and others through charitable giving and volunteerism. Each year eBay Foundation provides grants of more than US$2 million to improve the lives of those who most need help, with many of the recipient organizations selected from customer and employee recommendations.
