Commuters and city workers in Melbourne are being given a ‘larger than life’ view of careers in the Not for Profit sector thanks to a Victorian Council of Social Service project.

VCOSS launched its outside exhibition Care to Make a Difference in the Melbourne City Square featuring life size images of people and their stories in the community sector.

More than 30 Victorian community workers have put themselves on display to inspire others to ‘Care to make a Difference’ until May 20th.

Cath Smith, CEO of the Victorian Council of Social Service says despite most people benefiting from a community service at some point in their lives, job seekers are often unaware of the rewarding careers available in the community services industry.

Smith says that with social inclusion high on the agenda for state and federal governments the expertise of the community services industry is central to creating a fairer Australia.

Joan Kirner, Victoria’s first Community Ambassador, former Premier and one time community told the lunchtime crowd at the launch last week that from neighbourhood houses to homelessness services, Victorians make a difference, and with the right attitude, by working with (not for) people, they help organisations and change lives.

David Imber, VCOSS Policy & Public Affairs Manager says while many young people may aspire to be a policeman, nurse or lawyer, few probably consider being the manager of a homeless service.

He says the aim of the exhibition is to showcase and celebrate the work that is done and highlight the opportunities for others wanting to make a difference.
