Exec Training for the Arts - Scholarship Winners

Australian Business Arts Foundation, AbaF has announced the first successful applicants to its new program of executive development for arts managers called the AbaF Margaret Lawrence Bequest Scholarship.
Eight arts leaders from around Australia have been selected to participate in executive training at Melbourne Business School or Australian Graduate School of Management (AGSM) in Sydney. The scholarships cover tuition and accommodation fees, and travel for interstate applicants.
The scholarships combine the passions of the late philanthropist, Margaret Lawrence for the arts and for education. The Foundation she established is providing the resources to fund the scholarships.
The total value of scholarships awarded is $72,000. The value of scholarships varies from $5,000 to $12,740, depending on which program the applicants have chosen. The successful applicants will begin their programs in the first few months of 2007, some as early as March. The successful applicants are:

– Anna Draffin (VIC) – Deputy Director, Heide Museum of Modern Art
General Manager Program, Australian Graduate School of Management
– Suzie Haslehurst (WA) – General Manager, Magabala Books Aboriginal Corporation
Leadership Development Program, Melbourne Business School
– Paul Mason (NSW) – Manager Content Services, Community Broadcasting Association
General Manager Program, Australian Graduate School of Management
– Fiona Maxwell (VIC) – General Manager, Next Wave Festival
The Emotionally Intelligent Leader, Melbourne Business School
– Astrid Wootton (TAS) – General Manager/CEO, Design Centre – Tasmania

Twenty-five people applied for the scholarships, with the successful applicants chosen by a selection committee consisting of: Susan Alleyn, Director, Open Enrolment Programs, AGSM; Rob Brookman, General Manager, Sydney Theatre Company; Merryn Carter, Marketing Manager, AbaF; Steven Pozel, Director, Object; Margaret Seares, Senior Deputy Vice Chancellor, University of WA; Richard Searle, Program Director, Melbourne Business School, Ann Tonks, General Manager, Melbourne Theatre Company.
Kathy Keele, CEO of AbaF says arts managers face many of the same challenges as managers from other industries – a demanding business environment, financial bottom lines, changing technology, pressure to innovate, people management.
She says this scholarship will provide arts managers with access to the best management education in the country, to hone their skills.
